Where we started:
Cradock Show Agricultural Society
The Cradock Agricultural Society was established in 1864.
Through-out the years, it was one of the few shows in South Africa
that continued through the Boer War, World War 1 and World War 2 as
well as the big droughts. It was only interrupted from 1974 to 1978
when a big flood destroyed the showgrounds. The building of the new
showgrounds was completed in 1978.
The Society made history in 2006 by presenting the first official
lucern show in the country which was a great success. It took nplace
under the leadership of André Bezuidenhout and the two judges,
Prof Hentie van der Merwe and Gerrie Scholtz, Phd student from the
University of the Free State. Chemical analysis of the lucern was
made by a infrared spectrophotometer. Since then this
competition has grown annually.
The Society can now proudly say that it hosted one of the best
horseshows in the country with approximately 220 plus entries.
Boerperd, American Saddle Horse and Welsh Ponies were shown and the
quality of the horses were tremendous.
In the Small stock section Merino, Angora, Boerbok and Dorpersheep
were in exhibition for two days. Entries came form the best Stud
Breeds in Cradock and the surrounding districts. A Slaughter Lamb
competition was also held as lambs were judged on the hoof and after
it had been slaughtered on the hook. A Youthshow and Cattleshow were
also part of the program.
There were also lots of entertainment for children and exhibition of
Tractors, Implements and Vehicles. The Eastern Cape Veteran Engin
and Tractor Show was also held. A Sheepdog exhibition and lots of
stalls were also included.
The Society held a very successful show receiving a lot of
compliments in 2008 and we hope to improve in the future. |
